Back on Track

We’ve missed a couple of blog posts because we’ve been deep into detail work, which doesn’t seem to lend itself to blog creativity!

We’ve made a miniature exhibit of our winter lecture series presentation: “Wonderfully Modern Herreshoff Manufacturing Company”, which you can see in our shop if you come by for a visit.

Steve has been finishing the metal angle iron cheeks on the mast; these hold four upper main shrouds, forestay, two preventer stays (main running back stays), and the throat halyard strap.

Meanwhile. Keith has been working on the spreader, and you can see the start of Bill’s jig to make the deck-edge toe rails in the background; Sandy has also been filing, grinding, and polishing more than 150 shackles. You see these in rough form (dark bronze), polished state (bright brass), and finished nickel-plated product in the bins. Hooks are next, and then the dreaded 140 ash blocks from scratch.

Steve is also starting to work on the final tap and die work for all the turnbuckles.

Laura has been making grommets which turn into balloon jib straps, jib tack straps, jib pennants, spinnaker straps, and a throat halyard strap.

Bowsprit Cone and Spreader Updates

Mike has been making wax molds for the angle iron cheeks on the mast. Now, he’s also making a new and improved bowsprit cone.

Meanwhile, Bill continues to work on the spreader. Keith used a mag drill to bore out the holes in the display base to which the keel blocks will be bolted.

On a side note, Keith and Bill took some time off to respond to an SOS from volunteers making Herreshoff Museum’s new steam engine exhibit. It looks like we’ll be making some display stands. You all really need to see this exhibit!

Spreader and Topmast Updates

Bill and Keith have been working on metal collars for the spreader. The inboard collar has been fastened to the mast and we’re fitting it to the wooden spreader as shown.

We’ve also inserted our telescoping topmast to ensure that we understand how to fasten it in place. The topmast really changes our appreciation of the rig; we’re almost as long as Building 28 is wide, without even mounting the topsail yard! We may have to open a window…

Keith has been worried that our main mast will fit; we’ve found out that we actually have a few inches to spare. It’s still not much…

We have 48′ of brass deck railing to shape. Bill believes he can accomplish this using the table saw and has been busy trying out a number of creative jigs and fixtures.

Another Weekend in the Books

Keith put final touches on our spreaders; it really changes the whole boat! We can but imagine how large these were in real life.

Tim and Keith worked on tapping holes for eyes to go on the mast and we’ve screwed them in place temporarily to get everything aligned.

Soon we’ll remove them and send them to a nickel plating company along with some other fittings. Tim also finished up some leftover woodworking tasks while I was grinding and polishing new boom fittings that Mike delivered from our casting company.

Meanwhile, Laura, our rigger, has been doing a great job wire splicing as per usual, and even showed us how to make some tacks from wire grommets!

Everything’s Coming Together

Keith made a jig to hold the spreaders in perfect alignment while the spreader socket pins set in high-tech glues. The bowsprit is starting to look awesome. You can really get the feeling of how massive it was!

Back to Work!

It is good to be back to work! Here’s a picture of the Saturday crew. Left to right:

We had a great work session – after catching up on all the holiday happenings and telling sea stories.

If you look on the fore-deck, you’ll see the incredible dolphin striker assembly, bowsprit spreader sockets and hawse pipe lips that Mike Mirman just delivered. We’ll be getting these in place over the next month.

You may also have noted that six mahogany stained hatches and the companionway are on deck. RELIANCE’s furniture was butternut and from the pictures stained a mahogany color and then varnished.  Joe Uzzo delivered the stained structures, and we worked with him to perfect our technique to attach the canvas tops.  The companionway has a sliding top and glass portholes.  Joe is working to add the barometer, clock and race card which rest on a ledge in the companionway. Still to go are the monitor and large two piece hatch cover.

Keith has been working inside RELIANCE to adjust the mast step to her rake. He’s also been making a metal display stand for our 2′ long 14″ diameter solid bowsprit replica while Herb Luther finishes shaping it and preparing it for varnish.

We’re also preparing plans for laying cork on the deck, attaching the fittings and painting.  We’ll talk about that soon.

The year has gone quickly and it is hard to believe we’ve been at this for 15 months! I think most of us (all volunteers) can’t believe how much progress has been made! Last year at this time we were working on the boom and waiting for the hull to show up. Now we can really see how majestic and beautiful our RELIANCE will be!

Saturday was our last work session of the year. Thursday before, we drilled holes in the fiberglass base, put some wing nuts the bolts for extra holding power, filled the holes with epoxy glue and set everything in place to cure. On Saturday, Keith Bradley made some final adjustments and our stub mast sits as the mast should!

We also finished fairing the main chain plates and so have all chain plates in place; even with a token shackle and turnbuckle attached! Other volunteers finished filing and buffing all the beautiful fittings Mike Mirman has made for us over the year -so they have a miniature, true-to-scale jewelry finish.

So, as we take our shore leave for Christmas and New Years holidays, we’ll leave you with pictures of the mast step and Reliance as she waits for 2014 work to begin. Best wishes to everyone for happy holidays and a great RELIANCE New Year.Image

Keith and Joe have been busy! The Hatches, Mast Step and Chain Plates

Team members Keith Bradley and Joe Uzzo have been busy.  Here we show 6 pictures of their progress below.

#2 & 3 show the mast step which will be bolted into an internal fiberglass mast step. It is adjustable so we can get the mast aligned fore and aft and side to side to the waterline. RELIANCE had about 2 degree mast rake aft Photos

#4 & 5 show the main chain plates and backstay chain plates. The hull has been cut to receive these plates and they will be screwed and glued in place and then we’ll back-fill with fiberglass material. They cant inward and are differing angles fore and aft.
